By painting the human figure/portrait, I explore the construction of identity, how to render the individual identity and to the sense of presence in a portrait. I am interested in working with portraiture as art and how to push portraiture further. I have been focusing on rendering two aspects of the human being: the presentation of the self and morphology. Through these two aspects of the psychological and physical, I am interested in the nature of being. We physiologically and psychologically experience a constant metamorphosis. I am interested in the observation of that evolution, how it affects the artifice of the presentation of the self, how to document it; and finally, how by the act of creating a portrait, the art itself acquires an identity of its own.

Born in rural Kansas, the youngest of four to God-fearing conservative parents, Grauer left to bigger pastures to complete his degrees in human biology and his MFA in medical illustration from the University of Kansas and Michigan, respectively.  Upon graduation, he moved to New York City and worked as an art director, illustrator and opened and operated a vintage interior design store.  Upon the sudden death of his brother in 2012, Grauer committed his life to an authentic pursuit to his passion of art making.  Grauer has garnered success with showing work internationally, including being shortlisted for the 2015 Wells Art Contemporary Award in the UK and exhibiting with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London.  Currently he is showing with several galleries throughout the Hudson Valley including Carrie Haddad in Hudson, NY.  He continues his practice in Poughkeepsie, NY.
